NOICATTARO

One of the most fertile towns in the Southern area of Bari for the production of table grape, Noicattaro is located 6 kilometres from the seacoast and about 15 kilometres far from Bari, on a slope furrowed by sheets of sedimentary rock lowering to the Adriatic reefs.
The old town boasts some interesting noble palaces such as Plazzo Ducale, Palazzo Crapuzzi, Palazzo Saponaro, Palazzo Macario, Palazzo Santoro, and Palazzo Siciliani. The mystic fervour of the Middle Ages witnessed the spread of numerous chapels and churches. The former are now almost disappeared, while the latter are open to worship and exhibit structures and items of great artistic value.
Dated to this period are considerable architectural sites such as the Curch of Carmine and the annexed Monastry of Carmelitani Calzati. Worth mentioning are the Chiesa Matrice built between the XIII and XIV centuries in Apulian Romanesque style with a wonderful ligneous choir; the Church of S. Maria del Carmine (XV century) with the annexed monastery which hosted the Carmelites until 1809; the Church of S. Maria della Lama (XI century), built close to an alluvial bed and with the annexed Monastery of the Padri Agostianiani; the Church of S. Maria di Loreto, 2 kilometres far from the town centre, recently open to worship and already pilgrimage destination.
